Random

3.5 Stars

I had mixed feelings about Lark O’Neal’s Random. I had a hard time giving this book 3.5, I wanted to give it more because I liked the premise, the story, and the characters, but…well, let’s just dive in.

(Synopsis via Goodreads):
Life is random…

19-year-old Jess Donovan knows better than most that life is random. Her mom is dead, and she’s on her own, patching together a living as a waitress when a car crashes through the restaurant where she works. In two seconds, she loses her job, watches her best friend hauled away in an ambulance…and meets Tyler Smith, one of the hottest, most fascinating—and mysterious guys she’s ever met.

Both for the good and the bad…

Within days, Jess is swept up into the mesmerizing force that is Tyler. Their every touch sizzles, every kiss dissolves them both, and the sex is…fierce. But there’s more to Tyler than his hypnotic eyes. He’s adrift, too, and his body—and his soul—are covered with scars. How can she find herself with a guy who is lost himself?

Until you take charge….

Jess is determined to find her way, and make a life that is better than the one she was given. But how?

What I liked and found to be the 5-star aspects?
The writing! The stream-of-consciousness style Lark implements was unique, rarely seen, and added to feeling like a part of the story. Written in first person of Jess, we get a sense of who she is, her personality, and her reactions to life. As a nineteen-year old, living on her own, the stream-of-consciousness writing is realistic to what really goes on in the mind of someone in this place in life.

Tyler won me over instantly; sweet, helpful, gorgeous, yet incredibly troubled. No matter what happened, what he said or how he reacted, I wanted him to win Jess over.
All of the other characters add to the complexity of the story as well as to Jess and Tyler’s relationship.
I may be biased, but my other favorite aspect is the setting in Manitou Springs/ Colorado Springs (yup, Colorado native-ish, right here)

Why I didn’t give it a 5-star review?
It seemed all over the place in several events, jumping from one thing to the next pretty quickly without much closure (if any) from what was happening before.
I didn’t feel some spots got as in-depth as they could have and as I would have liked.
And finally, more grammatical errors than should present.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story of Jess and Tyler and I am excited to see what happens with them individually and together in book 2.

Going Long

5 Game-Winning Stars!!

After reading this book, I don’t think I need to do cardio for a week. My heart rate was constantly up and hanging on the edge just waiting to see what happened next.
Ginger Scott’s Going Long is the incredible sequel to Waiting on the Sidelines that tells the continuing story of Nolan and Reed.
Having found true love in one another in high school after others and events trying to keep them apart for years, they are both off to college; separate colleges. Reed is playing football for U of A while Nolan is going to school at ASU. Their lives are busy, yet they find themselves with each other at every spare moment and Nolan never misses one of Reed’s games.
After two years, Reed is NFL draft eligible, causing an internal battle for Nolan. Reed can’t stand being apart from Nolan any longer. These two have set themselves on yet another roller coaster ride of turmoil, temptation, trials, and loss of trust.
Nolan has an experience that no one should ever go through, and she keeps it from Reed, even though it is eating away at her from the inside out.
Reed feels Nolan pulling away from him, but he can’t figure out why until he overhears a conversation Nolan has with the guy from her building.
Hearts are ripped to shreds, communication lost, and Reed and Nolan are just trying to figure out what to do next.

I loved everything about this book…Even when I really wanted to chuck it across the room. They would always come so close to being okay and something or someone would slide right in and shift their course.

I am in love with Reed and adore Nolan. They are truly two of my favorite book characters and true loves. I am always wary of sequels, especially when the first book doesn’t have a cliffhanger, but this one was amazing!

Forever Innocent

5 I-Can’t-Breathe Stars!

I do not even know where to start with all of the thoughts and emotions that are plaguing me right now. How about with the synopsis (provided by goodreads)

Forever Innocent by Deanna Roy
"Our baby died on prom night, and nothing was ever the same again."

Corabelle doesn’t feel like any of the other college girls. On what should have been one of the happiest nights of her life, she and her boyfriend Gavin watched a nurse disconnect the ventilator from their seven-day-old baby. During the funeral two days later, Gavin walked out and never returned.
Since then, her life has been a spiral of disasters. The only thing that has helped is her ability to black out whenever the pain gets too hard to bear, a habit that has become an addiction.
When Gavin shows up in her astronomy class four years later, he is hell-bent on getting her back, insisting she forgive him. Corabelle knows she can’t resist the touch that fills the empty ache that has haunted her since he left. But if he learns what she has done, if he follows the trail back through her past, her secrets will destroy their love completely. And once again, she’ll lose the only person who always believed she was innocent.

Okay, insert of biased opinion: I am a mother of a beautiful 4 year old girl and I have never known the life of my second child so this book really hit me hard and I cried a lot.
Now, that aside, I know any compassionate person, a lover of romance, a believer in second chances, or someone dealing with harder-than-most things in life will enjoy this book.
Corabelle is a strong person, but almost to the point of unemotional. She doesn’t let others get close to her for fear of them finding out the truth about her past.
Gavin walked out on his childhood best friend and one true love just to end up with prostitutes and the ten year plan for college. No attachments, no emotions.
When these two find themselves in the same class four years after losing everything, their reunion and attempts to not crumble again are heartbreaking yet hope fulfilling. Their love and connection is absolutely amazing and the life they had planned for themselves and Finn is one to be envied and one to mourn when it was all ripped away.
I find this storyline to be incredibly realistic and not a tragic story placed in a magical fairy tale setting where everything is fixed easily. Nothing fixes this easily. It is a long road of healing and Deanna demonstrates that magnificently in her writing of Corabelle and Gavin. I cannot wait to read the second installment, Forever Loved.

A Must Read!

Cinderella Screwed Me Over

4 Fairy-Tales-Exist Stars!

Once again, I find myself loving a Cindi Madsen book. Cinderella Screwed Me Over is truly a book for the ladies and epic romance failures. We all try to imagine we’ll have our knight-in-shining- armor roll in on his “white horse” wheels, sweep us off our feet and treat us like royalty. However, that is the stuff of fairy tales. Or so we believe anyway…
Darby is the very cynical realist when it comes to relationships. She has real-life experience. She’s been there, done that, not doing it again. She’s the expert, she knows what she’s talking about.
Throughout her 28 years of life, she has been through multiple seemingly fairy tale relationships that have promise and hope, but then the guy takes off his armor and there is a scrawny, lousy, selfish soul underneath and her romantic dream of true love and happily ever after is shattered. Over and over again Darby keeps placing herself in these situations and it has left her heart hard, with walls built high and rules in place in order for it to stay intact.
But then comes along Jake. The owner of her favorite restaurant, tenant in her building, and because of those two things, he has already broken two of her precious rules. But, as Jake says, “two strikes isn’t enough to get out. You need three.” And boy does he use that little extra wiggle room to get one date with Darby.
As Darby finds herself breaking all of her rules, one by one, slowly breaking down her wall, she finds herself in trouble; her past colliding with her present, reminding her of why she has her rules.
Can she ever allow herself to be with Jake, the one man she wants to say F**K the rules for? Or will her past failures continue to dictate her life?
There were times that I wanted to slap Darby and tell her to get over her rules and let Jake in, but I still have that romantic vibe thrumming through me and I would always be that fool getting hurt over and over again. Darby is fun, loving, strong, and stubborn and matches perfectly with Jake’s sexy, sweet, funny, and drool-worthiness. My heart melted a little for them every time they were in the same room.

I highly recommend this book to anyone jaded by love or hopelessly romantic

Escaping Reality

5 Outstanding Stars!

And by outstanding, I mean, that is a complete understatement for Lisa Renee Jones' Escaping Reality (The Secret Life of Amy Bensen #1). I have read the Inside Out Trilogy by Ms. Jones and I really liked them, but I simply adore the life of Amy and Liam.
There is always something that calls to my inner-romantic when there is a “damsel in distress”. Not any kind of damsel though. More in the realms of a strong woman who has taken care of herself and survived without anyone else.  Enter the devastatingly handsome guy that oozes sex and possessiveness that wants to take care of and protect her and I am putty to the book’s hands. I will dive head first into a story of survival, love, run, don’t run, stay strong, crumble, protect, run, “Oh who am I kidding, I couldn’t leave if I tried”.
Amy Bensen is on the run for her life. For the last six years she has managed to stay off the radar from those who want her dead; those that have been tracking her since the night she lost everything and her world flipped inside out. Of course, Amy isn’t her real name and they have discovered she isn’t who she says she is. She is back on the run and she finds herself on a plane headed to Denver sitting next to the sexy billionaire, Liam Stone.
Amy is instantly drawn to Liam for some unexplainable reason and no matter how hard she tries to escape his depth, he is still there reminding her that her life isn’t safe, things aren’t adding up, and she doesn’t know how to escape Liam so he won’t end up like everyone else in her life; Dead.
As Amy tries to get her new life going in Denver, she realizes there is something wrong with this whole new set-up and she discovers a betrayal that sends her running again, but not away this time. This time, she is running right into the chaos that changed her life.
Amy and Liam are written incredibly well, their personalities clashing and melding and creating havoc within themselves. Both of their walls are crumbling and they have no power to stop it.
I have been rooting for Amy and Liam and whatever it is that brings them together. With a cliffhanger that rivals some of my favorite cliffhangers, I absolutely cannot wait to read the 2nd book Infinite Possibilites.

Come Undone

4 I-Didn’t-See-That-Coming Stars!

I was taken by surprise when I read Madelynne Ellis’ Come Undone. I was intrigued by it just from the synopsis, hence the reason I requested a copy for review. But man, did I get more than I bargained for.
Xane Geist, frontman for Goth-metal band, Black Halo, sexy as sin, full of secrets, and disbanding the group right in the middle of a sold-out show.
Enter Daniella Fosbrook. Always following the rules in order to stay under the radar, Xane’s #1 Fan, rebellious in any way when it comes to Black Halo and secrets that stem from the marks that cover her skin.
Caught between his band members and no way to escape, Xane seeks the help of Dani who had lost her way backstage. Slipping through the doors out into the night, Xane and Dani start on an unknown adventure to discovering themselves, the secrets they carry, the secrets of those around them and what life and love means to them.
Xane and Dani are characters with extreme personalities that open you up, make you sit on the edge of your seat, never letting you stop reading about their tale. Their sexual chemistry is off the charts and hot hot hot. Madelynne explores not just heterosexual relationships, but capturing relationships in all regards. Yes, complete with cliffhanger, I cannot wait to read the next book, yet I feel satisfied with Xane and Dani’s relationship.

Waiting on the Sidelines

5 WOW-inspired Stars!!

Wow is really the only word that comes to mind when I think of Ginger Scott’s Waiting on the Sidelines. It was really all my brain could compute when I finished reading it.
It is the wonderful coming-of-age tale of one’s first love and heartbreak and self-discovery. Nolan Lennox has always been a tomboy, excelled at sports, and loved her family and humble life. Until a boy came along. Reed Johnson made her question everything about herself and that is dangerous for a 14 year-old girl.
Waiting on the Sidelines spans the four-year high school journey of Nolan and Reed. Fate throws them together when these two are paired for a class science project in which they get to know each other and their friendship blossoms. That is, until the popular junior girl, Tatum, comes into the picture. Tatum snags Reed right out from under Nolan. The first heartbreak for Nolan when it comes to sweet and devilishly charming Reed.
Tatum is mean girl extraordinaire and puts Nolan through hell. But Nolan doesn’t always let Tatum win. But it’s not the battles that matter to Nolan, it’s the war. The war for Reed’s heart.
Reed is always on Nolan’s mind, and Reed wants to be a better person, doing things right, for Nolan. These two are a catastrophe and a perfect match. And their story says it all.

I cannot even begin to describe all of the amazing things in this book because I would just be giving away everything. Ginger’s writing is phenomenal, had me putting off all of my midterms and projects just so I could finish her book and know what happens; it was well worth it. It was heart-pounding, heart-stopping, and completely took my breath away. I may have shed a tear or two. Each character is unique and carves a place in your heart, especially Nolan and Reed.

I can’t say much more other than to go get it and read it yourself.

Breaking Nova

4 Save My Soul Stars!

Wow. Just Wow. I have never read one of Jessica Sorensen’s books before, (even though I have The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden on my kindle begging me to read it) and after reading Breaking Nova, I cannot wait to get started on her others.
Breaking Nova was incredibly heartfelt, heart breaking, and heart stopping. Nova and her struggle to find her identity along with some form of reason to live after the love of her life dies grabbed a hold of my heart and took me on a roller coaster ride of epic proportions. Add in Quinton, his guilt, regret, disappointment, shame, and death that surrounds him and then I feel like I’m in free-fall.
Nova and Quinton meet through mutual friends, not knowing a thing about each other, but they somehow sense the other is lost, sad, hurting, and not wanting to think about the pain they carry around with themselves every day. They find companionship, passion, numbness, and escape in one another. But their ghosts and self-deprecation still haunts them and they can’t let it go.
Their destructive natures, their downward spiral into finding the emptiness, less-painful way of life has them dragging each other closer and closer to a deep abyss.
Jessica’s writing had me falling with Nova and Quinton, wishing I could claw my way out with them. It was phenomenal on so many levels. I felt a part of the story, like I was the one doing the drugs, doing the drinking, suffering, having panic attacks, feeling the passion, feeling bleak, being hopeful, and the list goes on and on. At one point, I had to put it down and wait a couple days before diving back in because of the intense way it swallowed me up. I loved it.
Breaking Nova is a story of two young people who have demons they live with that no one should have, and even though their demons are different, they’re affected in similar ways and giving each other reason to fight them. But will they win their battles when everything, not just their demons, continues to hold them down?

Find out and go get it!!

Dirty Trick

5 Unmasked Stars!!

I feel like if I give the written review that I really want to give this book, than the best, hidden parts of Christine Bell’s Dirty Trick will be revealed and I don’t like doing reviews with spoilers. So for this go-round, I will focus on the characters of this book that I adored; Patrick and Grace. But first, how about the synopsis (provided by goodreads.com)

Grace Love is lousy with men. She can spot a match for someone else a mile away, and her balls-on instincts are why her matchmaking business is thriving, but finding her own Prince Charming? The only guy who makes her sixth sense tingle is her playboy best friend, Trick, and no way is she risking their friendship, no matter how hot she knows the sex will be.
SWAT officer Trick Matthews is a patient guy, but Grace’s inability to see what’s right in front of her is grinding on his last nerve. Yeah, he blew his shot at breaking out of the friend zone when he tamped down the urge to lick her from head to toe the day they met, but he’s got a plan that’ll change her mind. Incognito at Salem’s hottest Halloween party, he’ll show her exactly how good they could be…and that he’s the man for her.

First off, I am not a big fan of the name Patrick, but when he is a sexy, SWAT commander, a “bona fide police hero” with a “rich male voice”, and he goes by Trick, I love it. It just makes him seem all that more unattainable, yet every woman’s dream. Trick has always been there for Grace and Grace is ever so grateful for their friendship. Even though she craves more from him, wanting to take him out of the friend zone, she can’t bring herself to do it. She was emotionally and mentally scarred from her ex-fiancĂ©, never trusting anyone again except for Serena (her business partner) and Trick. She doesn’t want to lose that trust she has with Trick. But what else could she be missing out on by not taking the risk to be with him?
Grace is an incredibly smart, witty, beautiful woman, but refuses to put her heart out there. She doesn’t believe in herself and she doesn’t believe that anyone will want to be with the real her. Yet, despite all of that, she is successful in her career, she takes care of what is important to her and she takes good care of herself.
Even though Trick’s methods are not necessarily the smartest ways to go about his mission, the thought behind his actions is undeniably swoon-worthy.
Grace and Trick are a pair that fit seamlessly together in their banter, their desires, their love of life, and their drive to take care of those they love.
Bravo to Christine for this wonderful story of insecurity, love, betrayal, and desire.

East Of Ecstasy Cover Reveal!!!

I don't know about you, but I cannot wait for Laura Kaye's East of Ecstasy! It is the last of the four part Hearts of the Anemoi series.
The expected Publication date? April 2014. So far away!! But worth the wait and it gives you all a chance to read the first three (if you haven't, and you most definitely should).
For now, Enjoy the cover, which is just as enticing as the first three :D

About East of Ecstasy:

Annalise Fallston made peace with postponing her big-city dreams to care for her ill father, but lately she’s been filled with a restlessness not even her beloved painting dispels. Worse, the colors don’t speak to her as they always have, and all her efforts produce dark, foreboding images of a dangerous man and a terrifying future.

Devlin Eston, black-souled son of the evil Anemoi Eurus, is the only one who can thwart his father’s plan to overthrow the Supreme God of Wind and Storms. But first, Dev must master the unstable powers he’s been given. Distrusted and shunned by his own divine family, he never expected to find kindness and passion in the arms of a mortal.

But Devlin’s love puts Annalise in the path of a catastrophic storm, and in the final Armageddon showdown between the Anemoi and Eurus, sacrifices will be made, hearts broken, and lives changed forever…or lost.

The first three in this series? Check out my review of South of Surrender (the third) which gives links to the other books; North of Need, West of Want.

About Laura Kaye:
